Historical NoteAfter the partition of India in 1947, the predominantly Muslim state of Jammu and Kashmir was made a part of India instead of Pakistan. In 1965, Pakistan invaded Kashmir to take the province and was unsuccessful. Before the war, the United States had provided both Pakistan and India with military assistance and foreign aid, but afterwards Pakistan aligned itself more with China and India developed closer relations with the Soviet Union. U Thant was a Burmese diplomat and the Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1961-1971, and so also was a part of Vietnam War negociations.
