Historical NoteIn his early presidency, Lyndon Johnson continued the policies of John F. Kennedy in Vietnam, but in early 1964, Johnson increased overt United States involvement in the war. While initially allied with each other, tensions grew between Cuba and the Soviet Union because Cuba began to increase diplomatic relations with China despite the Sino-Soviet split.
