Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ dangles a carrot ("$ Billion Aid Program") in front of an alligator ("Hanoi"). In his other hand, LBJ has a giant club. The alligator says, "What does he take me for--a vegetarian?". Caption: “Doesn’t Like Carrots”. Artist signature lower right: "B. Green”.

Historical NoteIn August 1964, US ships were seemingly attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin, leading to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution that allowed President Johnson to take military action. In February 1965, Johnson authorized Operation Rolling Thunder to bomb North Vietnam and in March, 3500 Marines were deployed in Vietnam. In 1965, Lyndon Johnson hoped to provide foreign aid to South Vietnam to maintain stability through bringing electricity, building clinics, and importing materials into South Vietnam for building homes and factories.
