Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ holds a tiger ("Vietnam") by the tail. A man (identifiable as Harold Wilson) holds another tiger ("Rhodesia") by its tail. Smoke ("SOS”) emerges from Wilson’s pipe. Caption: “Stick to Your Own Tiger, Lyndon”. Artist signature lower left: "Bill McClanahan”.
Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower right: [underline] “55.6”. Sketch in blue of a man on the reverse side.
Historical NoteIn August 1964, US ships were seemingly attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin, leading to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution that allowed President Johnson to take military action. In February 1965, Johnson authorized Operation Rolling Thunder to bomb North Vietnam and in March, 3500 Marines were deployed in Vietnam. On November 11, 1965, Ian Smith, the prime minister of Southern Rhodesia declared independence from the United Kingdom with the Unilateral Declaration of Independence, which went unrecognized by the UK and the United Nations.
