Physical Description
Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. LBJ cowers in a hospital bed. A doctor (identifiable as Everett Dirksen) enters the room with a saw, X-Ray ("LBJ's '65 Program Agenda"), and clipboard ("Removal of Section 14-B Repeal"). The orderly brings a gurney. Caption: “Oh Yes--There Is One Other Thing Before You Go”. Artist signature lower right: "Bob Taylor”.
Historical NoteOn October 8, 1965, President Johnson underwent gallbladder surgery at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Also in 1965, President Johnson tried to end right-to-work laws in nineteen states, which would have resulted in the repeal of 14(b) of the Taft-Hartley Act. Right-to-work laws allow workers to choose not to join unions. In this cartoon, Johnson's doctor that will be performing the surgery is Everett Dirksen, a Republican senator from Illinois who was the Senate Minority Leader during Lyndon Johnson’s presidency and opposed against the repeal of 14(b).
