Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A man ("British Leftist") tries to hide a closet full of warships ("England's Long History of Battleship Diplomacy") while he wags his finger and says to LBJ, "What you're doing in Vietnam is all wrong!". Artist signature lower left: "Bill McClanahan”.

Historical NoteGunboat diplomacy refers to how countries would show off their fleets of battleships to intimidate another country. The United Kingdom used this method prominently in the 19th century. Left wingers in the United Kingdom rallied and protested against the Vietnam War.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
