Physical DescriptionPhysical DescriptionPrint reproduction of a 4-frame cartoon drawing. Vietnamese newspaper clipping, anti-American. Frame 1: A man (“US”) walks with a tank and helicopter. Frame 2: A man (“US”) flies a helicopter over a fire and cries. Frame 3: A man (“US”) hides in a woman’s leg ready to shoot. Another man (“US”) hides in a glass ready to shoot. Behind the glass is a wine bottle. Another man (“US”) wears a 2 of diamonds card and holds up money. His gun is over his shoulder. Frame 4: A man (“US) carries a trophy (“1”), dropping supplies as he runs away from a sword with a star on it.
Historical NoteIn August 1964, US ships were seemingly attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin, leading to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution that allowed President Johnson to take military action. In February 1965, Johnson authorized Operation Rolling Thunder to bomb North Vietnam and in March, 3500 Marines were deployed in Vietnam. Over 1965, the year this Vietnamese cartoon was made, President Johnson escalated the conflict to a full-scale war with 175,000 American troops.Additional Details
