Historical NoteJohn Connally was former aide to Lyndon Johnson. In 1961, John F. Kennedy named him Secretary of the Navy. In 1962, he was elected governor of Texas. While being a Democrat, he supported Richard Nixon and was appointed Secretary of the Treasury. In 1973, he switched parties and became a Republican, and he ran for president in 1980.
