Physical DescriptionPrint reproduction of cartoon drawing. A man walks into a room ("Hanoi Propaganda Dept") with a paper (“Statement on attempted rescue of POWs”) toward a machine (“Teletype”). Two men watch while another man works at a desk. Signs (“Idea Dept.” “Only Our Propaganda is Truth” “Long Live Fulbright” “And Ted Kennedy and McGovern!!”) hang on the wall. A heart with an arrow shot through it is drawn on the wall under a portrait of a man (identifiable as J. William Fulbright). Historical NoteJ. William Fulbright was a Democratic senator from Arkansas. He was the head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and supported detente policies. He became one of the loudest critics of the Johnson administration’s Vietnam policy. George McGovern, a senator from South Dakota, was a prominent critic of the Vietnam War. He later ran for president in 1968 and 1972. Ted Kennedy was Robert F. Kennedy's brother and a senator from Massachusetts.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
