Historical Note
In 1965, Republican John Lindsay won the New York mayoral election against Conservative William F. Buckley and Democrat Abraham Beame. The elephant in the cartoon has donkey ears, demonstrating how Lindsay received support from the Liberal Party of New York.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
