Historical NoteThe John Birch Society is a right-wing, anti-Communist group. During the 1960s, it opposed the Johnson administration’s Vietnam War policy, considering the intervention to be part of a Communist conspiracy. It also opposed the civil rights movement and socially liberal movements.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
