Physical DescriptionPrint reproduction of cartoon drawing. Two women hold protest signs. One woman holds a dripping water pistol and a sign reading: "Clobber the fascist war-mongers! Amalgamated harpies for peace". The other woman has a sign reading: “Down with the commie U.N. Support the Smirch Society”. Caption reads: "Why Shoot 'Em, Dearie? It's More Fun to Hit 'Em with the Signs". Artist signature lower right: "© 1965 Mauldin Chicago Sun-Times".

Historical NoteThe John Birch Society is a right-wing, anti-Communist group. During the 1960s, it opposed the Johnson administration’s Vietnam War policy, considering the intervention to be part of a Communist conspiracy. It also opposed the civil rights movement and socially liberal movements.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
