Physical Description
Physical DescriptionPrint reproduction of cartoon drawing. Five men look at a ticker tape ("New York Stock Exchange") and read updates about LBJ’s health. A huge exchange board ("Barrel, Bench, Fierce, Tanner & Jones") is behind them. Caption reads: "...Pulse 72, Blood Pressure 140/80, Respiration 18, Hemoglobin 15 grams, White Cell Count 6000, Weight 202, The President slept 7 hours, Breakfast 400 calories..." Artist signature lower right: "© 1965 Mauldin Chicago Sun-Times".
Historical NoteFollowing President Johnson's gall bladder surgery in 1965, George Reedy's press conferences from Bethesda were frequent and contained fairly extensive updates on his health along the lines of what the ticker tape readout is in the cartoon. "Barrel, Bench, Fierce, Tanner and Jones" is a play on Merrill, Lynch, Pierce, Fenner and Smith), and these financiers appear to be monitoring the president's health data as they would market data.
