Physical DescriptionPrint reproduction of cartoon drawing. A giant snake, with hammer and sickle markings, tries to eat a man's ("Sukarno") legs. Two men with clubs ("Indonesians") try to fight it off. Caption reads: "Did You Say Down with Yankee Imperialism!?". Artist signature lower right: "© 1965 Mauldin Chicago Sun-Times".
Historical Note
Indonesian President Sukarno maintained strong relations with both China and the Soviet Union. In September 1965 a Western-backed military coup ousted Sukarno from power, leading to mass killings of suspected communists and sympathizers.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
