Physical DescriptionPhysical DescriptionPrint reproduction of cartoon drawing. An elephant has the head of a man (identifiable as Barry Goldwater) attached to its own. Goldwater holds a club and a book (“Bible”). On the back of the elephant ride various men including men dressed as police, cowboys, businessmen and soldiers, a burning cross, bags of money, and a woman holding up the female and male symbols. The elephant has stepped on several men (“L.” “S.” “R.”). In the trunk of the elephant rides a sleeping man (“Ike”). In front of the elephant walks a woman and a bomb (“H”) floats above her. Historical NoteDuring the 1964 election cycle, Arizona Senator Barry Goldwater ran as a Republican against incumbent President Lyndon Johnson. Goldwater was pro-war and famously said "Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice" and "Moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue," which emboldened the conservative wing of the Republican Party.Additional Details
