Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. A woman speaks to a man while people march outside a gate (“White House”). They hold signs (“Get Out of Vietnam”, “No More War”, and “[P]eace”). A small piece of paper “Berry’s World” adhered to upper left. Caption: “Oh, Heavens, No; I'm Not a Demonstrator--I'm Trying to Wangle an Invitation to Luci's Wedding!”. Artist signature lower left: "Jim Berry”.

Historical NoteOn August 6, 1966, Luci Johnson married Patrick Nugent at the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception with a reception ceremony at the White House. The marriage was televised and highly reported on. The Antiwar Movement (1964-1973) emerged in response to the Vietnam War and included many activist groups such as the Students for a Democratic Society and the Yippies and used tactics such as mass demonstrations, sit-ins, teach-ins, and guerilla theater.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon B Johnson Presidential Library in 1973.
