From 1938 through 1979, Pap Dean worked as a political cartoonist for the Shreveport Times. Dean served in the United States Army for three and a half years during WWII, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel by the end of his service. Dean was inducted into the Louisiana Political Hall of Fame and was the author of many books, including Louisiana Historical Homesteads (1985), Louisiana a Political History in Cartoon and Narrative (1993), and Historic Natchitoches (1995).
