AFL-CIO

founded 1955
Commonly known today as the "AFL-CIO," the American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations was formed when the American Federation of Labor (founded 1886) and Congress of Industrial Organizations (founded in 1935) merged in 1955. Between 1955 and 2005, the AFL–CIO's member unions came to represent nearly all unionized workers in the United States.
