James Blaine served six consecutive terms in the House of Representatives from 1863 to 1876 and one term as a U.S. Senator from 1876 to 1881. Blaine was appointed as the Secretary of State during the James Garfield administration in 1881 and the Benjamin Harrison administration in 1889. In 1884 and 1876, Blaine campaigned unsuccessfully for the presidential election as a Republican.
