William Jennings Bryan unsuccessfully campaigned as the Democratic Party's Presidential nominee in 1896, 1900, and 1908. From 1891 to 1895, Bryan served two terms in the House of Representatives before losing the 1894 Senate election to Republican candidate John Mellen Thurston. In 1913, Bryan was appointed as Secretary of State during the Wilson administration.
