Jacob Burck was an editorial cartoonist that worked for the Daily Worker in 1929, drawing comics that promoted communist ideals. After visiting the Soviet Union in 1935, Burck grew disillusioned with the cause and began working for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in 1937 before moving on to the Chicago Daily Times in 1938. Over the course of his career, Burck had published more than 10,000 cartoons and won a Pulitzer Prize in 1942 for his drawing If I Should Die Before I Wake.
