Lloyd M. Bentsen served three consecutive terms in the United States House of Representatives from 1948 to 1955, and four consecutive terms in the United States Senate from 1971 to 1993. In 1988, Bentsen campaigned as the vice-president to Democratic presidential nominee Michael Dukakis, but was defeated by the Republican presidential nominee George H. W. Bush and his vice-presidential candidate, Dan Quayle. Under President Bill Clinton, Bentsen was appointed Secretary of the Treasury in 1993.
