From 1919 through 1943, Richard E. Berlin was promoted within Hearst Corporation from advertising trainee to presidency of the magazine division. Berlin was named president of the corporation in November 1943, and later maintained the additional position of chief editor until his retirement in 1973. In November of 1967, President Lyndon B. Johnson frequently discussed the presidential campaign with Berlin.
