Carl Albert

American, 1908 - 2000
Carl Bert Albert (b. May 10, 1908, North McAlester, Oklahoma-d. February 4, 2000, McAlester, Oklahoma) served as a Democratic U.S. Congressman from January 3, 1947 to January 3, 1977. Prior to his role in politics he was a lawyer, and in 1935 opened his own law practice. He then went on to serve in the U.S. Army during World War II (1941-1946). In 1946, Albert was elected as a Democrat to represent Oklahoma’s 3rd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives. He served from 1946 until his retirement at the end of the 94th Congress in January 1977. In 1955, he was appointed House Majority Whip and in 1961 as House Majority Leader. He also served as the Speaker of the House of Representatives from January 21, 1971 to January 3, 1977.
