Edward W. Kemble

1861 - 1933
Edward Windsor Kemble, usually cited as E. W. Kemble, (b. January 18, 1861, Sacramento, California-d. September 19, 1933, Ridgefield Connecticut) was an American illustrator and political cartoonist. He received his formal art training at the Art Students League of New York while working as the political cartoonist for New York Graphic. He was a frequent contributor to Life magazine’s early issues and was staff political cartoonist for Collier’s from 1903-1907, Harper’s Weekly from 1907-1912 (before returning to Collier’s) and for Leslie’s Weekly and Judge in the late 1910s. However, Kemble is best known for illustrating the first edition of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn and for his cartoons of African Americans.
