Richard Brevard Russell, Jr. (b. Nov. 2, 1897, Winder, Ga.-d. Jan. 21, 1971, Washington, D.C.), U.S. Senator from Georgia, graduated from the University of Georgia law school in 1918. He served with the U.S. Naval Reserve (1918) and was a member of the State House of Representatives from 1921 to 1931. He was the Governor of Georgia when elected in 1932 as a Democrat to the Senate, serving from 1933 until his death in 1971. Senator Russell served as President pro tempore for two Congresses and on several key committees, including Armed Services and Appropriations.
