Leonid Brezhnev served as Chairman of the Supreme Soviet Presidium from 1960 to 1964. After his resignation, Brezhnev was appointed General Secretary of the Communist Party by party leader Nikita Khrushchev. In 1976, he was awarded the title of Marshal, and from 1977 to 1982, Brezhnev held office again as Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet.
