Robert Carlyle Byrd was a politician from West Virginia who served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1953 to 1959 and the U.S. Senate from 1959 to 2010. During his time in the Senate, Byrd was elected as the Democratic Majority Leader in 1971 and 1987, Democratic Minority Leader in 1981, and President Pro Tempore in 1989, 2001, and 2007.
