De Gaulle was a French military officer who led Free France against Nazi Germany during World War II. After the war, he worked to restore democracy to France, rewriting its constitution providing for a strong presidency for the Fifth Republic . He served as its president 1959-1969. During his presidency, he was critical of U.S. involvement in Vietnam and criticized the U.S. economic preeminence post World War II. De Gaulle resigned the presidency in 1969 and died about a year later after suffering an aneurysm. De Gaulle occupies a place of prominence in French and world history.
