From 1933 to 1939, John W. Bricker was Attorney General of Ohio, and from 1940 to 1945, he held office as Governor of Ohio. In the 1944 presidential election, Bricker campaigned as Thomas E. Dewey's running mate but was defeated by Democratic nominee Franklin D. Roosevelt and his vice-president Harry S. Truman. Bricker went on to be elected to the United States Senate, where he served from 1947 to 1959.
