A lifelong resident of Manhattan, Curran was a lawyer and politician there and active in the Republican party. He served as an assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York. Gov. Thomas Dewey appointed him Secretary of State of New York, an office in which he served from 1943-1955. He became leader of the New York County Republican organization in 1940 and served as that until his death in 1958.
