U.S. Air Force pilot and engineer, Grissom was one of the original seven men chosen for Project Mercury by NASA to train and launch astronauts into outer space. As part of the Mercury and Gemini programs, he was the first man to fly into outer space twice. He was killed in an accidental fire at Cape Canaveral in 1967. President Johnson attended his funeral services at Arlington National Cemetery.
