Carl Curtis was elected to the House of Representatives in 1938 and was re-elected every two years until 1954. Curtis campaigned against incumbent Hazel Abel for the senator position from Nebraska in 1955 and won. Curtis was subsequently re-elected as Senator three more consecutive times, serving from 1955 to 1979.
