Virgil Chapman was elected as the U.S Representative from Kentucky in 1924. He served ten terms in office from 1925 to 1929 and 1931 to 1949. Chapman advanced his political career further when he was elected to the United States Senate in 1948, defeating Republican challenger John Sherman Cooper.
