Ervin was a U.S. Senator from North Carolina from 1954 to 1974. As a lawyer, he was a defender of Jim Crow and racial segregation laws and served as the South’s constitutional expert during the congressional debates on civil rights. He is also known for his work investigating and ultimately bringing down Sen. Joseph McCarthy in 1954. As chair of the Senate Watergate Committee, he rose to prominence among his colleagues during the investigation and hearings of the Watergate scandal which eventually led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon.
