A political leader and statesman from Indiana, Bayh was a member of the state house of representatives where he also served as speaker. He represented Indiana in the U.S. Senate as a Democrat from 1962 to 1980. He authored two constitutional amendments and Title IX, giving women equal opportunities in public education.
