A native of Spain, De Alba was a well-known political cartoonist in his home country and abroad, including in the United States. His political commentary through his cartoons rankled some of the powerful in Spain from the 1930s onward. In 1954, he moved to New York and Washington D.C. His cartoons were in the Washington Daily News. Columbia University nominated him for a Pulitzer Prize in cartooning, although his foreign status prevented him from receiving the award. President Lyndon Johnson, an avid collector of political cartoons, requested numerous of De Alba’s works. The LBJ Library and Museum has 72 of his works and De Alba received correspondence from President Johnson at the end of his term, inviting him to continue sending cartoons to the library.
