George McGovern was an American politician from North Dakota who served in the U.S. House of Representative from 1955 to 1961 and in the U.S Senate from 1963 to 1981. McGovern campaigned three times for the Democratic presidential nomination in 1968, 1945, and 1984. In 1972, McGovern was able to secure the nomination but lost the presidency to Republican nominee Richard Nixon.
