Joaquín Balaguer

Dominican, 1906 - 2002
President of the Dominican Republic, 1960-1961, 1966-1978, and 1986
Secretary of Education (1949-1955)
Dominican Ambassador to Colombia (1947-1949)
Ambassador to Mexico (1940-1947)

Joaquín Balaguer served as the ambassador to Mexico (1940-1947) and Colombia (1947-1949) in the Dominican Republic before being appointed the Secretary of Education (1949-1955) by dictator Rafael Trujillo. In 1957, Balaguer campaigned successfully for the vice president alongside incumbent Rafael Trujillo. Balaguer would go on to serve three non-consecutive terms as the president of the Dominican Republic in 1960, 1966, and 1986.
