Anna Rosenberg Hoffman political activities began in New York State, where she served as regional director for various boards from 1934 to 1945. Because of her expertise in government and welfare services, Hoffman served as a valuable advisor to both President Roosevelt and Truman, trusted enough to be sent overseas multiple times to evaluate the operations of the American military. Her efforts awarded her the Medal of Freedom (1945) and the Medal of Merit (1947), which served as a cornerstone for her appointment as the first female Assistant Secretary of Defense in 1950.
