In 1956, John F. Kennedy began to pursue the 1960 Democratic presidential nomination. He won the nomination over Senators Hubert H. Humphrey and Lyndon B. Johnson. With Johnson as his running mate, Kennedy faced Vice-president Richard M. Nixon in the general election. The campaign featured the first televised debate between presidential candidates. Kennedy became the youngest elected president in U.S. history at the age of forty-three, and the first to be born in the twentieth century. He was also the first Catholic to hold the nation's highest office. He was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas.
