Hubert Humphrey held office in the Senate for two terms, one from 1949 to 1964 and again from 1971 to 1978. He backed the Vietnam War while serving as the Vice President under President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965. Hubert campaigned as a Democratic presidential candidate but was defeated by Republican nominee Richard Nixon.
