Sargent Shriver was one of the primary founders of the Peace Corps and served as its first director from 1961 to 1966. Under the Lyndon B. Johnson administration, Shiver was appointed the first Director of the Office of Economic Opportunity in 1964 and later served as the U.S. Ambassador to France in 1968. Shriver ran for the Democratic presidential nomination briefly in 1976 but dropped out after the first round of primaries.
