Preston Smith was a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1945-1951, and moved on to the Texas Senate from 1957-1963. He later was elected Lt. Governor from Jan. 15, 1963-Jan. 21, 1969, and was the 40th governor of Texas from 1969-1973.
