Gene Basset began his career at the Indianapolis Times as a sketch artist, the Brooklyn Eagle as a theatrical caricaturist, and the Boston Post as a sports cartoonist. Basset traveled to Hawaii in 1961, after teaching at the Famous Artists School in Westport, Connecticut, to work as a editorial cartoonist for the Hawaii Star Bulletin. After that, Basset worked as an editorial cartoonist for the Scripps-Howard Newspapers from 1962 to 1981 and the Atlanta Journal from 1982 to 1992.
