President of Malawi (1967-1994)

Hastings Kamuzu Banda was a major figure in the Malwai nationalism movement. Banda served as Prime Minister from 1961 to 1966, first under Malawi's predecessor state Nyasaland (1961 to 1963), and later under the newly independent state Malawi (1964 to 1966). In 1967, Banda became President of Malawi and ruled the country until he was defeated in the country's first multiparty presidential election in 1994.
