Historical NoteOn August 4, 1965, Lyndon Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act, which banned literacy tests and poll taxes and provided federal oversight to ensure that new voting laws weren’t discriminatory. Ramsey Clark was the attorney general from 1967-1969 under President Johnson. He helped draft the Voting Rights Act and later, the Civil Rights Act of 1968.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
