On the floor is a newspaper ("Wayne Morse, GOP bolter, in revolt against Senate Majority Leader"). Caption: “Please, Ev, Please Take Him Back!!”.Artist signature lower right: "Jim Berryman Washington Star 9/6/59”.
Historical NoteWhen this cartoon was made, Lyndon Johnson was the Senate Majority Leader. Everett Dirksen was a Republican senator from Illinois who was the Senate Minority Leader from 1959-1969. Senator Wayne Morse of Oregon was initially a Republican Senator that left the Republican Party, became an independent for a couple years, and then was persuaded to join the Democrats by Senate Majority Leader Lyndon Johnson. He did not always vote along party lines and in 1959, when this cartoon was made, he denounced Johnson’s tactics for controlling the Senate.
