Inscriptions and MarkingsHandwritten at lower left: "December". Handwritten at lower right: "To President Johnson with my prayers for Peace. Peb".
Historical NoteAfter the partition of India in 1947, the predominantly Muslim state of Jammu and Kashmir was made a part of India instead of Pakistan. In 1965, Pakistan invaded Kashmir to take the province and was unsuccessful. Before the war, the United States had provided both Pakistan and India with military assistance and foreign aid, but afterwards Pakistan aligned itself more with China and India developed closer relations with the Soviet Union. In April 1965, the Dominican Revolutionary Party installed a president in the National Palace. In response, President Johnson sent Marines to the Dominican Republic to evacuate American citizens from the country, end the civil war, and establish a conservative Reformist Party government.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson personally, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1970.
