Physical DescriptionOriginal cartoon drawing. Man talks to Dirksen who carries a sign "Dirksen Amendment" as they walk down street. LBJ walks across the street carrying a sign "New Urban Affairs Dept." Caption reads: "No, No, Ev -- Get out the city vote, not throw out the city vote --". Artist signature lower left: "Graham".
Inscriptions and MarkingsAt lower left: "9-10-65". At lower center: "34" [illegible]. At lower right: "R-12". Alternate date (8-1-69) written on back.
Historical NoteThe Housing and Urban Development Act of 1965 expanded funding for federal housing, gave rent subsidies to elderly and disabled people, helped veterans get mortgages, and funded low-income housing, water and sewer facilitates, community centers, and beautification. Also in 1965, Johnson created the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Everett Dirksen was the Senate Minority Leader when this cartoon was made.

Custodial History NoteThe item was a gift from the general public to President Johnson during his term in office. It was received by President Johnson, until the President donated it to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in 1973.
